Top-notch GCSE results!

Following last week’s fabulous A-level results (69% A*/A, compared with the national 26.5%), our GCSE cohort can also be very proud of their achievements.

This was a year group which suffered more than some others as a result of lockdowns at a very formative time of their education and lives. They nevertheless rose sensibly and energetically to the challenges of an intensive series of public exams, contributing enthusiastically to music, sport, drama and other activities beyond the classroom, including charity-fundraising, community service and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

53% of all grades were at [9] or [8] (the old A* equivalent), with 70% between [9] and [7] (the old A*/A equivalent). 16 pupils from a cohort of 136 were rewarded with ten or more of the coveted grade [9], with Boris Dring celebrating that top grade in 12 subjects, including Italian and Further Maths. Leen Almasri, Prithika Anbezhil, Kathryn Bensi, Samuel Li, Sonia Naidu, Zara Rizvi, Jodhvir Singh and Abia Thangal were hot on their heels, with 11 top grades apiece. A very impressive 42 pupils achieved grades [8] or [9] in at least nine subjects.

Headmaster John Watson commented:

It has been a joy to celebrate with pupils, parents and teachers today. The earlier years of this cohort’s adolescence were marked by the pandemic, and I have been most impressed by the determination of so many to do and be their very best. I am very grateful for the inspiration and support they have received from academic and pastoral staff, as well as from their parents – as education is always a partnership. Most are looking forward to continuing at LGS to benefit from the many opportunities of our exciting Aspire programme.

The LGS Sixth Form is a very happy and ambitious part of our community, and Leicester Grammar’s reputation for high academic standards and attentive pastoral care has this year attracted more newcomers than ever. There are still places available for certain A level subjects, and interested prospective students are advised to consult the website and contact Mrs Natalie Hunt, Head of Marketing and Admissions, without delay (admissions@leicestergrammar.org.uk)
