Charitable Projects
The Charities Committee is led by a member of the teaching staff and run by sixth form student volunteers.
The committee run weekly form cake sales, where forms bake and then sell their goods to their peers, giving all funds to a charity of the form's choice. Recently, these have included:
- Cancer Research UK
- Macmillan
- Teamtrees.org
- Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Foundation
- Switch the Pitch Campaign - Leicester Hockey Club
Termly non uniform days have also fund-raised large amounts this year. In the Advent term we supported local charities Women's Aid Leicestershire and Jasmine House (Leicester Rape Crisis). We welcomed representatives into school and learnt a lot from their assemblies about the work they do and the people they support. Building on the Christmas shoebox success of the previous year, when Prep had put together thoughtful gift packages for the YMCA, all the Year 7s joined in and donated items for both the YMCA and Women's Aid Leicestershire. In the Lent term we supported Bliss, the leading UK charity for babies born premature or sick. We also donated money raised from wearing Christmas jumpers to Save the Children.
As part of the House System, the Houses fundraise throughout the year for a chosen charity and organise various events to raise awareness. Vice Chancellors chose to support Barnados, whilst Judges chose the Rainforest Alliance, and both made the most of fund-raising at the Lower School Disco. Dukes ran a very successful Valentine's Hearts delivery service in aid of Healing Little Hearts. Masters fund-raised a large amount through a cake sale, a chocolate fountain at the disco and a raffle at the lower school Drama production of Alice, supporting their charity the NSPCC. Senior House Captains spoke to the rest of the school about all four of these worthy causes in a House Meeting.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of our usual fundraising was stalled in the Trinity term. However, on Friday 19th June 2020 we organised a charity event to encourage pupils and staff to go for a socially distanced walk or run in their local area, whilst earning points for their House and donating to charity. We are incredibly proud of the efforts of pupils and staff, as well as Old Leicestrians and trustees, who raised over £22,000 (including Gift Aid) and covered more than 2000km. The money was largely donated to Pets As Therapy, a charity very meaningful to our school community, as well as local charity Open Hands. Some pupils went above and beyond: a Sixth Form pupil cycled a marathon 12 hours and a Year 10 pupil completed an Olympic distance triathlon in incredible time.
Pupils who are passionate about supporting a charitable cause are welcomed to contact the Charity Committee with their ideas.
The School's Uniform Service is also run by the Charities Committee volunteers - for more information, please see https://www.lgs-senior.org.uk/second-hand-uniform-shop
